NORTH CAROLINA
LAND OF OPPORTUNITY
Our ancestors first settled
in Pennsylvania where land had become scarce. Many settled there
and as soon as possible, they moved on to other locations. Another
reason was that the border between Penn. and Maryland had never
been surveyed and settlers were receiving grants from William
Penn and from Lord Baltimore for the same tracts of land. These
disputes were finally resolved with a survey that established
the borders and became known as the MASON-DIXON line. Jacob Rein
and his wife Elizabeth Glatfelder were living in that strip of
land before coming to N.C. As the Backwoods of N.C. (as it was
called) began to open up large tract of land were available. Many
people from Penn. moved there to settle. One was Wyrich Rudisill,
who had lived in the West Manchester area of York county. There
his daughter married Martin Rhein, a brother of Jacob REIN. Wyrich
Rudisill moved to N.C.about 1754,with son Phillip and Daughter
Johanna.
Phillip acquired a large tract of land, part of which he later
(about 1762) allowed Jacob Rhyne to settle upon. We conclude that
they had made some form of agreement that Jacob was to buy part
of Phillip`s land. Some time later in 1764 he made a deed to Jacob
Rein for part of the land. The following day he wrote his will.
And the following month the will was probated. This suggest that
Phillip was very sick or on his death bed and wanted to make sure
that Jacob Rein got the land He had been promised.
John Martin Rhein, older
brother of Jacob Rein, Married Elizabeth Rudisill in 1744 and
settled in Manchester area of York County, here he died in 1758
leaving his wife a widow with four young children: THOMAS,age
13, JACOB, age 12, MARTIN, age 6(who later died in 1764) and DORETHEA,
age 21/2. Son Thomas was bound to a saddle maker in Baltimore, and
Jacob was bound to a Tailor in York, Pa.
After Thomas and Jacob finished their apprentice-ship
widow ELIZABETH RUDISILL RINE her three children came to what
is now Gaston County, N.C. and settled near her Brother in Law
Jacob Rein on a tract of 600 acres granted to her in 1768 by Wm.
Tryon, Gov. Several Years later the names Rein,Rine,Rhein and
Rhine became RHYNE. It is from JACOB RHYNE and from the Children
of His brother JOHN MARTIN RHEIN, that all the North Carolina
RHYNE Family descend.( see Biography of JACOB RHYNE 1726-1795)
