HOW I FOUND MY ANCESTORS
by HOWARD S. RHYNE

Years ago , my mother showed me a copy of OUR KIN by Miles Hoffman published in 1915. Using this book , I made a Family Tree began with myself and going all the way back to my Pioneer Ancestor Jacob Rhyne and his wife "Elizabeth Wills". It was interesting to discover all the new family names that I was related too. With my mothers help I was also able to add to this tree a few enerations on both her mothers family and on her fathers family also.

It was years later that I began to record all the relatives beginning from my Great grandfather John Leroy Rhyne on down to the present generation. Realizing that my grandchildren's ancestry would be incomplete with out their fathers ancestors, I began researching the ancestry of all three of my son-in-laws. I also began searching for the ancestors of my wife`s mother and father. So, while in a library in Richmond Va.while searching for Fisher and Etheridge records, I discovered the Name Jacob Rein in the index. Referring back to the page indicated, I found an entry stating that Elizabeth Glattfelder had married Jacob Rein in the Lutheran Church at York Pa. The very same Church in which Mr. Hoffman`s son had found the baptism of Magdalena Rein , daughter of Jacob Rein and
wife Elizabeth. Mr.Hoffman, suggested that since our Jacob Rein in N.C. had a daughter born about the same time, and a wife named Elizabeth, then this Jacob must be the same Jacob that came to N.C.

Now we had a problem.Mr. Hoffman was suggesting that this Jacob Rein was our Jacob ,while at the same time he was stating that Our Jacob Rein was married to Elizabeth Wills. Had Mr. Hoffman`s son gone back a year earlier in the Church Records, he would have found the marriage of Jacob Rein And Elizabeth Glatfelder. In OUR KIN he stated that Jacob Rein was married to Elizabeth Wills, thought to be the sister of Garrett Wills.

Searching the records in Penn, I discovered The Rein name in Lancaster,York and Berks, county. I could find no other Jacob Rein that matched the time frame. In Lancaster Co. I found a Michael Rein family. A report on that family published in the Lancaster Co. Genealogy Society revealed no Jacob Rein . In York Co. I found a Martin Rhein and wife magdalena, with a son Martin Rhein and Wife Elizabeth Rudisill. There was also a Catherine Rhein, an Anna Maria Rein and a George Rein. None of the above could be connected except the two Martin Rheins. George Rein turned out to be the son of Michael Rein over in Lancaster County. There is an old German custom.of naming the first daughter after it`s grandmother. Since Jacob Rein of York Co. named his first child, Magdalena, I thought it possible that Jacob Rein just might be a brother to Martin and son of the elder Martin and his wife Magdalena.

Another strange coincidence was discovered. The Elizabeth Rudisill that married Martin Rhein, turned out to be the sister of Philip Rudisill, the very same Phillip Rudisill that gave Jacob Rein land to live on when he moved to N.C. we still could find to proof to show that these Rhein and Rein individuals were related.

About this time Robert Carpenter published a report on the North Carolina BEST Family that was found in records of a Church in Blankenloch Gr. I remembered seeing this Name" Blankenloch" mentioned in the death notice of the younger Martin Rhein. Mr. Miles Philbeck, who taught himself to read ancient German script, agreed to review the Microfilms of this Church records and he discovered not only the birth of Jacob Rein and The younger Martin Rhein but also Catherine and Anna Maria and another son Friderich.Their father and mother were the Elder Martin and Magdalena Freymuller
Rhein.Their name in the Church records was REINAU. Another look at some of the York
Co. Records revealed the Name Martin Reinau. This name had not previously been considered. This proved that the Reins ,Rheins in York County were all related. It did not prove that the York Co. Jacob Rein was the same as the N.C. Jacob Rein.

THIS WAS PROVEN by the following records. That we were able to collect and by association prove
the JACOB REIN in York Pa. was the Same JACOB that moved to N.C. In the Blankenloch Records we discovered that JACOB REINAU(REIN) had a 1st cousin PHILLIP HOOS . Phillip Hoos and his young bride Eva, came to America on the same Ship as did the Martin Reinau Family. Phillip settled near where Jacob Rein settled after he grew up and married Elizabeth Glatfelder.

In an old German Prayer Book photographed by Margaret W. Rhyne in Tenn. was found handwritten in German script the birth of Phillip Rein, son of Jacob Rein and Wife Elizabeth,in N.C. The sponsors at the baptism were Phillip Hoos and wife Eva. This baptism had taken place in Pa. and the book had been definitely traced to the Jacob Rhyne family in N.C. This proved that the Jacob in Pa. was the same Jacob in N.C.

Later discoveries by the Cloninger Family revealed that Garrett Wills NEVER had a sister Elizabeth but did IN FACT have a sister Charlotta Wills who was the mother of ADAM CLONINGER who married MAGDALENE REIN .IT IS THOUGHT THAT SOME ONE IN THE CLONINGER FAMILY TOLD Mr Hoffman, MY GRANDMOTHER was a Wills and He, not knowing about Charlotta Wills, thought they were referring to their Rein Grandmother.

There was some confusion in OUR KIN about the Children of Jacob and Elizabeth Rein. The York Pa. and Blankenloch records prove that THOMAS was a nephew of Jacob Rein. The wills of Jacob Rein and His single daughter Elizabeth(Molly) prove that There was a Daughter Eve who married a Best. and that Magdalene`s first name was Maria not Eve.
