2. Concerning memories of my mother:
Coming from the Victorian age, she never communicated in a real sens e with
her children while we were growing up. Her comments were directed at us , but I
guess she never volunteered information about her past or about her prese nt
state of affairs and we never asked. The primary observation was that sh e was
enduring extreme hardship, I always felt sorry for her. Raising eight ch ildren
by herself with no means of support is hard to believe in this day and ag e. I
do remember when she decided to take matters into her own hands while w e lived
in Erie by selling Avon products. She had to take the bus across town an d make
the rounds. I do not know if she brought in much money but it gave her
confidence to apply for a nursing job with Hamot Hospital. I remember th e
little samples of lipstick amd creams and we marveled at all the nice stu ff we
could put on our faces (of course we were too little to wear it in publi c but
fun to play with).
I was always proud of her, the way she left for work on foot each nigh t
after we were put to bed. The hospital was at least two or three miles f rom
home and hearing her footsteps outside the window as she came home in the
morning is something I will never forget. We had to move out of the hous e
after spending several years there as the place was sold for taxes. (W e never
paid any rent - I don't know how we got away with it). Sometimes after s he
left the hospital in the morning she would take the bus to the Farmer's m arket
on 12th street and bring home wonderful cheeses and breads. Until she fo und
work as a nurse we literally lived from hand to mouth sometimes dependin g on
neighbors for handouts.
During all these periods in Elmira, Erie, and Lawrence Park, the day s must
have seemed dreary indeed. Only a strong woman could have withstood th e pain
and suffering. Perhaps the best description I can think of that describe s my
mother is that she was our last link from a differebt age with principle s of
dignity, duty, loyalty and self-sufficiency.
