800 GERMAN SOLDIERS AND OFFICERS "ALMOST" SURRENDER TO CLIFFORD SHULTZ

With the 12th Armored Division, 7th Army, Germany - News that the war wa s over reacted peculiarly on men of the 17th Armored Infantry Dattalion' s C Company - they turned around and retreated as fast as they could! Cop yright FamilyHart 2009 - .

The "armistice" came about when Sgt. Clifford Shultz, 825 Ash Street, sco ut for the first platoon of the 12th Armored Division Infantry Unit, stop ped a German jeep coming up the road by the simple expedient of shootin g the driver. Out piled a German general and two lieutenants who explain ed that they wanted to surrender the Alpine town of Niederoberdorf togeth er with the 800 soldiers in and around it.

News was forwarded to headquarters, and Sgt. Shultz drove back into the t own
with the general to arrange the details. Then an SS captain pulled his p arty
rank on the general and forbade him to surrender. The apologetic command er
said he'd give the infantrymen just ten minutes to back away from the edg e of town, and then he'd have to start firing.

A bicycle was the handiest vehicle, so Shultz hopped aboard and pedalled
furiously back to his platoon, gave them the news that the war would be o ver
for the next ten minutes, and then joined the hasty retreat. The America ns had been looking down the barrels of eight leveled flack guns and fou r 88's and they didn't like the view. Leading the advance had been Lt. D . B. Haag,
Mercer, Pa., and Lt. Glenn A Weir of Wichita.

They sat back that night and watched artillery and P-47's smash the tow n and
next morning they walked in and took over without opposition. But they'r e
still calling Shultz "Paul Revere."
