'Pat' Houser, 64, of 1233 Summit Drive, Bel lefonte, died at Centre Community Hospital Monday (May 18, 1987) at 8:5 0 a.m. Mr. Houser was founder and chairman of Houser Vending Co. and fou nder of Houser Development Co. He was also developer of Dale Summit Comm ercial Park and Dale Summit Square. A life member of the Benevolent an d Protective Order of the Elks 1094, Bellefonte, he also was a member o f Bellefonte Moose, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1600 in Bellefonte an d American Legion Brooks-Doll Ebeling Post 33 in Bellefonte and America n Legion in Milesburg. He was a life member of Nittany Country Club, Min goville, a member of Centre Hills Country Club and was given a life membe rship by Bellefonte Jaycees for outstanding achievement. He was also a m ember of Trinity United Methodist Church, Bellefonte. Mr. Houser was dir ector of Appalachian Thruway Association, served on the regional board o f Mid-State Bank, served for two terms as president of Bellefonte Area Ch amber of Commerce, was a member of Centre County Industrial Corp., a pas t president and treasurer of Bellefonte Industrial Development Authorit y and a past chairman of Centre County United Way Fund. He was active o n the Republican committee and was past president of Republican Clubs o f Centre County, was a vice president of the Centre County Vacationland C ouncil and was a former trustee of Centre Community Hospiital and Bellefo nte YMCA. He was born Oct. 7, 1922, in Bellefonte, a son of Ellis R. o f Bellefonte and the late Mabel Fanning Houser. In 1943, he married th e former Jane Aikey, who survives. In addition to his father and wife, h e is survived by two sons: Jack and Tim, both of Bellefonte; a sister, Lo uise Perts of Bellefonte; and three grandchildren. Private funeral servi ces will be held at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Robert A . Heydenreich officiating. Burial will be at Union Cemetery, Bellefonte . Memorial contributions may be made to American Lukemia Society of Amer ica Inc., 211 E. 43rd St. New York, N.Y. 10017; to Trinity United Methodi st Church, Bellefonte; to Pine Hall Lutheran Church, State College; or t o American Diabetes Association, P.O. An announcement in the "CDT" of 19 May 1987 read: "Houser Best Known Fo r Vending Company.--Ellis F. 'Pat' Houser, who died yesterday morning, wa s remembered by friends as a self-made, community-minded man. Houser, 64 , of 1233 Summit Drive, Bellefonte, died at Centre Community Hospital yes terday at 8:50 a.m. Houser probably is best identifiied with Houser Vend ing Co., which he founded in 1948. The company brought many jobs to Bell efonte, said R. Bruce Manchester, a Bellefonte attorney. But he also fou nded Houser Development Co., which developed Dale Summit Commercial Par k and Dale Summit Square in College Township. Dale Summit Square include s the buildings from Joel Confer to Centre Video. Jack Heckendorn of Kis singer Leonard & Brower Realtors worked with Houser for 14 years, most re cently on the Dale Summit projects. Houser accomplished much, Heckendor n said. He developed 28 acres in the commercial park on Commerical Boule vard and 10 acres in Dale Summit Square. Heckendorn estimated that House r had developed more than 100,000 square feet of space in 15 separate bui ldings. Heckendorn said he had a lot of respect for Houser and was "deep ly distressed" by his death. He said he talked with him about business l ast Thursday. Stan Miler, president of Stan Miller Ford Lincoln Mercur y Inc., said the death of his friend of 25 years came as a shock. "He wa s the type of individual who got things done," Miller said. Miller sai d Houser also helped many people start their businesses with both guidanc e and money. "A lot of people are going to miss him," he said. Gino For nicola, president of Historic Bellefonte Inc., and owner of an insulatio n business, was one businessman who benefitted from Houser. "I'll rememb er him affectionately as one of the people who gave me a big break," Forn icola said. "It's because of Pat Houser that I was able to educate my ch ildren. I owned the Bush House Hotel only by the good graces of Pat Hous er." Fornicola operated the Bush House until 1976. Houser was part owne r, he said. "I remember him as man I could go to no matter how busy he w as. He always had time for me," Fornicola said. He said he "lost a dea r good friend." Manchester described Houser as a "self-made man." Wha t Houser owned came from hard work, he said. In October 1984, the Bellef onte Area Chamber of Commerce gave Houser a community service award. Man chester said Houser was very community-oriented. "His contributions wil l be remembered," he said. Obituary information is on page B-3."
