Garnet Henry Barkley was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1908. He ca me to Detroit, MI in 1923 at 15 years old with his father. His mother an d the rest of the family came to Detroit in 1924. Garnet attended Lorn e School, Point St. Charles in Montreal and Cass Tech in Detroit, MI. H e served an apprenticeship of 7 years to be a Linotype operator at the De troit Free Press. During the early depression he spent some time in Regi na, Saskatchewan as a printer and played hockey for the city.
He returned to Detroit via the boxcars about 1934. He also worked as a n Ice Man during this time. He met Julia Shoults in March of 1936 and ma rried her on May 21, 1936 after a short courtship. They have been marrie d for 62 years. While he was in Regina he worked for the Leader-Post.

He grew to 6'0' tall and weighed between 210-235#. He had pale blue eye s with dark brown curly hair as a young man but grayed completely by hi s mid-thirties. He is now 90 years old and still very sharp mentally bu t needs a walker to get around.

As a young man he had a drinking problem but joined AA in 1946 and has no t drank since then. He also left the Free Press at that time and worke d delivering coal. He then went to work for Abbe Press where he was th e night foreman. When Abbe Press merged with Post Printing he continue d as foreman until he retired in 1970at 62 years old. He moved to Brooks ville, Florida with his wife in 1977 where he started a lawn service fo r the "old people" until his eye sight started to fail about 1991. He an d his wife moved to Southgate, MI in March 1997 where they reside in a la rge apartment.

He has always enjoyed music of any kind and was able to play the piano b y ear. As a young man in Canada he played to cornet for the Salvation Ar my band. He was also an excellent dancer, winning many dance contests du ring the 20's and 30's. He is a gentle man and took great pride in his f amily. His hobbies included golf, bowling and fishing. He is totally in ept with tools which was a source of frustration all his life.
