!His obituary in the "Centre Democrat" of Thu. 29 Nov 1934 read: "Missin g Man Is Found Dead On Lonely Hillside.--Remains of Howard Confer, 70, o f Centre Mills, Discovered Monday By Hunters.--Fell Exhausted Only Two Mi les From Home.--Coroner Heaton Decides Inquest Unnecessary; Funeral Was H eld Wednesday Morning.--The body of Howard F. Confer, 70-year-old Centr e Mills resident who wandered away from home on November 13, and who las t week became the object of an intensive search in the southern part of t he county, was found by a group of hunters late Monday morning. The rema ins were found on the north side of Egg Hill, not far from Potters Mills , and only about two miles from his home. It was lying under a small pin e tree, face down, in such a position as to lead to the belief that he wa s overcome by exhaustion. There were no marks upon the body to indicat e that he had been attacked, or had struggled after he fell. Dr. W. R. H eaton, of Philipsburg, Centre County Coroner, was notified that he author ized the removal of the body to the Frank V. Goodhart Funeral Home in Cen tre Hall, where on Monday night he conducted an investigation. Unable t o find any evidences of foul play, Dr. Heaton, without empaneling a coron er's jury, certified that the aged man's death was due to a combination o f heart failure and exhaustion. Several years ago Mr. Confer suffere d a paralytic stroke, which left one leg in such condition that walking s ince that time has been a difficult and exhausting task for him. The pl ace where his body was found was near the top of an extremely steep ris e on Egg Hill, and those who knew the man marvel at his feat in getting a s far as he did because of his crippled condition. They believe that th e effort overtaxed his heart. Mr. Confer left home on Tuesday, Novembe r 13, and started to walk to Spring Mills. He was picked up by a milk tr uck, according to reports, and taken to the C. P. Long store in Spring Mi lls, where he was last seen alive, according to the information available . Early last week when his prolonged absence alarmed his family, who wer e accustomed to having him stay with friends for several days at a time , a searching party of more than 200 persons, headed by Deputy Sheriff Jo hn Bower scoured the Sinking Creek and Egg Hill vicinities but found no t race of the man. Although death is believed to have taken place not lon g after Mr. Confer's disappearance, the body was in an excellent state o f preservation. Mr. Confer was a native of Potter township, having bee n born there on March 15, 1869. He was twice married, his first wife, Co ra Weaver, being deceased. His second wife, the former Mary Breon, and t wo children by that marriage, William and Effie Confer, both at home, sur vive. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the Georges Valle y church, in charge of the Rev. Mr. Zang, Centre Hall, and interment wa s made in the cemetery adjoining the church."
